Who Is Thomas Washington Disney?

Thomas Washington is not a real Disney executive. He is a character created for a mockumentary-style episode of Atlanta, where he is shown becoming CEO of Disney and influencing A Goofy Movie (1995) in a fictional narrative.

Origin of the Thomas Washington Story

Thomas Washington first appeared in Atlanta Season 4, Episode 8, titled The Goof Who Sat By the Door. The episode is presented like a documentary about his life and time at Disney. It was written by Francesca Sloane and Karen Joseph Adcock and aired in October 2022.

The episode uses documentary techniques to explore Washington’s rise to the CEO position, his vision for an inclusive Disney film, and his downfall. Despite feeling realistic, every part of this narrative is fictional.

Why People Believed the Story Was Real

Many viewers initially believed the Thomas Washington story because of how convincingly the Atlanta episode mimics real documentaries. Fake archival footage, interviews, and animation terminology were used to make the plot feel authentic. On social media and discussion forums, people admitted searching for “Thomas Washington Disney” thinking he might have been real.

The episode uses cultural references from the 1990s and integrates real events such as the Los Angeles riots to make the story more plausible.

The Fictional Narrative Explained

Accidental CEO Appointment

In the mockumentary story, the Disney CEO dies unexpectedly during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. The board intends to hire a white executive named Tom Washington, but a clerical mix-up lands Thomas Washington, a Black animator, in the role instead.

This plot point serves as satire about corporate decision-making and the superficial nature of symbolic diversity.

Creative Vision at Disney

Once CEO in the story, Thomas Washington is depicted as wanting to make “the Blackest movie of all time,” which he pushes forward through a reimagined version of A Goofy Movie. The narrative portrays him pushing boundaries by asking why Disney characters like Goofy and Pluto are depicted the way they are, and how Disney stories could be more culturally reflective.

Personal Struggles and Downfall

The mockumentary shows Washington’s personal and professional challenges. His relationship with his family deteriorates, he starts emulating Goofy’s mannerisms, and Disney executives begin questioning his leadership. Eventually, he is offered a large payout to resign. When he refuses, he leaves Disney, his car is found in a lake, and he is presumed dead although no body is ever recovered.

This dramatic ending reinforces the surreal, fictional nature of the story.

Thomas Washington’s Portrayal in Atlanta

Actor Eric Berryman plays Thomas Washington in the series. The episode’s documentary framing, combined with expert cinematography and storytelling, blurs the line between fiction and plausible corporate history.

Critics praised the episode for its realism and social commentary, noting that the structure makes viewers second-guess whether they are watching fact or fiction.

The Real History of Disney Leadership

In reality, The Walt Disney Company has never appointed a CEO named Thomas Washington, nor has it ever had a Black CEO. Disney’s CEO history includes leaders such as Michael Eisner and Bob Iger, but none with that name or backstory.

Disney’s leadership historically has been white. The fictional story of Washington is not part of the company’s real corporate history.

Real Black Pioneers in Disney’s History

While Thomas Washington is fictional, there are real Black creatives who made history at Disney. Floyd Norman is widely known as the first African-American animator at Disney. He worked on Sleeping Beauty, The Jungle Book, and other classic Disney films. Norman’s career began in the 1950s, and his influence on animation is real and well documented. Norman often spoke about his experiences as an animator and has been a respected figure in animation for decades.

Cultural Impact of the Fictional Story

Although the Thomas Washington narrative is fictional, it sparked discussions about diversity and representation in Hollywood and large corporations. Because the story was so convincing, it prompted conversations about what leadership diversity looks like in real life.

Artists, critics, and audiences have used the episode as a starting point to discuss systemic barriers in the entertainment industry and imagine alternative histories of inclusion.
