A spider plant is one of the easiest indoor plants to keep alive. It grows well even if you forget to water it sometimes, and it can adjust to many types of indoor spaces.
🌤 Light
Spider plants like bright light, but not strong, direct sun.
A window with filtered daylight is perfect. If the leaves start to fade or lose their stripes, it may need a brighter spot. If the leaves turn brown or crispy, it may be getting too much sun.
💧 Water
Water the plant when the top layer of soil feels dry.
Do not let the soil stay wet for too long. After watering, let extra water drain out from the bottom. If your tap water is very hard or chalky, the leaf tips may turn brown — in that case, let the water sit overnight before using it.
🪴 Soil & Pot
A loose, well-draining indoor potting mix works best.
The pot must have drainage holes. Spider plants do not need deep pots; they grow better when the roots are a bit cramped. Repot only when you see roots pushing out from the top or bottom of the pot.
🌡 Temperature & Air
Normal room temperature is fine. It likes fresh air but not cold drafts.
If the room is very dry (especially with heaters or air conditioners running), the tips of the leaves can dry out. Light misting can help in dry conditions.
🌱 Feeding
During spring and summer, feed with a mild houseplant fertiliser about once a month.
Do not fertilise heavily — too much can damage the tips of the leaves. In winter, you can stop feeding or reduce it a lot.
Common Problems and Simple Fixes
| Problem | Reason | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Brown or crispy tips | Hard water, dry air, over-fertilising | Trim tips, reduce fertiliser, improve humidity |
| Yellow leaves | Overwatering or poor drainage | Let soil dry more, check pot holes |
| Slow growth | Low light or no nutrients | Move to brighter spot, feed lightly |
| Few or no baby plantlets | Pot too big or plant too “comfortable” | Keep slightly root-bound, give good light |
Propagation (How to make new plants)
Spider plants naturally grow baby offshoots that hang from long stems. To grow a new plant:
- Wait until the baby has small roots.
- Cut it from the main plant.
- Place it in a small pot with moist soil.
- Keep it in a bright but indirect light area until it settles.
Within a few weeks, it will root and become a full new plant.
Quick Care Summary
- Bright but indirect sunlight
- Water when the top soil is dry
- Do not keep soil soggy
- Normal room temperature
- Light feeding in growing season
- Trim brown tips if needed
- Use baby plantlets for easy propagation
