How their careers began

Tom Cruise was born in Syracuse, New York, in 1962. He began appearing in films in the early 1980s and became a major star with Risky Business in 1983 and Top Gun in 1986. In Top Gun, he played Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a Navy pilot whose confidence and competitive drive helped define one of his best-known roles.

Cruise did not build his career through action films alone. He played a soldier dealing with the effects of the Vietnam War in Born on the Fourth of July, a sports agent in Jerry Maguire, and a troubled speaker in Magnolia. Those performances earned him Academy Award nominations. His dramatic work matters to his action career because many of his films depend on the audience caring about the person at the center of the danger.

Ryan Reynolds was born in Vancouver, Canada, in 1976. His early film career included comedy, romance, and supporting roles in action stories. He reached a wider audience through films such as Van Wilder, Definitely, Maybe, and The Proposal. These roles gave him room to develop the quick, conversational humor that later became central to his screen identity.

Reynolds also appeared in action and superhero films before Deadpool. His credits included Blade: Trinity, X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Green Lantern, and Safe House. The films gave him experience with fight scenes, visual effects, and large productions, although they used his comic style in different ways.

Their paths into action were therefore different. Cruise was already a leading dramatic actor when he took on the role of Ethan Hunt. Reynolds moved between comedy and action before finding a superhero character built around both.

Tom Cruise and the rise of Mission: Impossible

The first Mission: Impossible film arrived in 1996, with Cruise playing Ethan Hunt. Hunt is an agent whose assignments often involve secret identities, complex plans, and serious risks to his team. The role gave Cruise a continuing action series that could change with each film while keeping the same lead character.

The series has made Hunt more than a skilled agent. He is usually shown working under pressure, relying on other people, and making difficult choices when a mission goes wrong. In Mission: Impossible – Fallout, for example, his decision to save his team affects the wider mission. That choice gives the action a clear reason: Hunt must deal with the results of what he has done.

Each film also needs to make its threat easy to follow. A stolen weapon, a compromised agency, or a dangerous opponent gives Hunt a problem to solve. The missions can involve many places and characters, but the central question is usually direct: can Hunt protect people before the threat reaches them?

Cruise’s role as a producer has also been important to the series. He has helped keep Mission: Impossible centered on practical action, physical performance, and the experience of seeing a large set piece in a theater. The films still use editing, effects, and stunt teams. The result comes from the work of many people, even when Cruise performs part of an action sequence himself.

Over time, Ethan Hunt has become the role most closely linked to Cruise’s action career. The series has allowed him to return to one character across decades without making every film tell the same story.

Ryan Reynolds and the success of Deadpool

Reynolds found his defining action role in Deadpool, released in 2016. He plays Wade Wilson, a mercenary who becomes Deadpool. The character fights with guns and swords, but he also jokes during danger, talks directly to the audience, and makes fun of superhero conventions. Reynolds both starred in and produced the film.

That mix of action and comedy distinguishes Deadpool from a more traditional screen hero. Wade can be rude, careless, and violent. He is also capable of loyalty and affection. Those qualities give the character a personal story beneath the jokes and fights.

Deadpool 2 continued the character’s story in 2018. Reynolds returned again in Deadpool & Wolverine in 2024. The films established Deadpool as a continuing role rather than a single successful performance.

The character also fits Reynolds’s delivery. His humor often depends on timing: a short remark after a serious statement, a joke in the middle of a fight, or a reaction that changes the mood of a scene. Deadpool gives him space to use that skill without leaving the action behind.

Reynolds’s action career is broader than one franchise. He plays an ordinary bank teller who learns he is a background character in a video game in Free Guy. The film uses chases and fights, but its central character begins with little understanding of the world around him. That gives Reynolds a different kind of action lead from Wade Wilson.

He has also appeared in Safe House, 6 Underground, and Red Notice. These films place him in more familiar action settings, including espionage and large-scale pursuits. Together, they show how often his action roles make room for humor, even when the film itself has serious stakes.

Two different kinds of action lead

Cruise’s action characters tend to treat danger with urgency. Ethan Hunt runs because he is short on time. Maverick flies because a mission demands skill that few people have. The tension often comes from whether the character and his team can complete a difficult task safely.

Reynolds’s best-known action character responds to danger with jokes. Deadpool can interrupt a fight to address the audience or mock an opponent. The action still has consequences within the story, but the humor changes how viewers experience it.

This difference affects the pace of their films. A Mission: Impossible scene may spend time explaining a plan before showing it fail. The audience then follows Hunt as he finds another way forward. A Deadpool scene may break its own rhythm with a joke, then return to the fight.

Both approaches require more than physical movement. Cruise must make an urgent mission clear and keep Hunt’s decisions believable. Reynolds must move between humor, violence, and emotion without losing the character’s voice. Their performances give viewers a reason to follow the action from one scene to the next.

The comparison does not mean Cruise never uses humor or Reynolds never plays a serious scene. Hunt’s exchanges with his team can be funny. Wade’s relationships can give his films emotional weight. What differs is the quality each actor places at the center of his best-known action role.

Stunts, effects, and physical performance

Cruise is widely associated with physically demanding action scenes. In the Mission: Impossible films, running, climbing, driving, and fighting help present Ethan Hunt as someone who faces danger at close range. A difficult stunt can hold attention because viewers can see a performer moving through a real space.

That does not make an action scene the work of one actor. Stunt performers, coordinators, camera crews, editors, and safety teams plan and complete these sequences. Their work helps turn a physical feat into a scene that advances the story.

Reynolds’s Deadpool films rely on a different visual style. Deadpool wears a full mask, uses weapons, and takes part in fights that combine performance with stunt work and visual effects. The mask means that movement and voice carry much of the character’s personality. A pause, a gesture, or a line delivered at the right moment can make a fight funny without stopping it.

These are useful distinctions for viewers comparing the two stars. Cruise’s films often draw attention to the difficulty of a physical task. Reynolds’s Deadpool films draw attention to how the character behaves while that task is happening. Both depend on careful planning and the work of a large film crew.

Top Gun and Deadpool as signature roles

Maverick and Deadpool show how different Cruise and Reynolds are on screen. Maverick is a pilot whose ability gives him confidence, but whose choices affect the people who trust him. Deadpool is a fighter whose humor can hide pain or make a dangerous moment feel absurd.

Cruise first played Maverick in Top Gun in 1986 and returned in Top Gun: Maverick decades later. The later film finds Maverick training younger pilots for a difficult mission. It gives the character an older role while keeping flying central to the story.

Reynolds’s Deadpool is less concerned with being a conventional role model. The films allow him to be selfish or inappropriate while still caring about particular people. That tension is part of why the character can carry both a personal story and an action comedy.

Each actor has also played action roles outside his signature character. Cruise appeared in films such as Minority Report, Collateral, and Edge of Tomorrow. Reynolds starred in Free Guy and acted in action thrillers before and after the first Deadpool. Looking beyond their main franchises gives a fuller view of their careers.

Work as actors and producers

Both stars have taken producer roles on major films in which they act. Cruise has producer credits connected to Top Gun: Maverick and the Mission: Impossible series. Reynolds produced and starred in Deadpool and Deadpool 2.

A producer credit can cover different responsibilities on different projects. It should not be treated as proof that one person made every creative or business decision. It does show that both actors have worked on their films beyond playing a character on camera.

Their established screen identities help explain why those roles matter. Audiences expect a Cruise action film to give them an urgent mission and a demanding central performance. They expect a Reynolds action comedy to give his character room to speak, react, and joke. Producers, writers, and directors can build a film around those strengths.

Neither career is limited to action. Cruise’s Academy Award nominations came from dramatic performances, including Born on the Fourth of July, Jerry Maguire, and Magnolia. Reynolds built a strong part of his career through comedy and romance before Deadpool. Their work outside action helped form the styles they later brought to it.

Have Ryan Reynolds and Tom Cruise appeared in a film together?

Ryan Reynolds and Tom Cruise are known for separate film careers. Reynolds is most closely linked to Deadpool, while Cruise is best known in action cinema for Ethan Hunt and Maverick. Their names are often paired for comparison, but they have not been established as a regular screen partnership.

For a viewer choosing between their films, the distinction is straightforward. The Mission: Impossible films focus on espionage, teamwork, and a mission under pressure. The Deadpool films combine superhero fights with adult humor and a lead character who comments on the action around him. Top Gun: Maverick centers on pilots preparing for a demanding flight, while Free Guy follows an unlikely hero inside a video game world.
