Little Island NYC is a public space built on the Hudson River that combines architecture, nature, and art. It has quickly become one of New York City’s most talked-about attractions for both locals and travelers.
Origin and Concept
Little Island NYC was designed as part of a project to bring creativity and green space back to Manhattan’s west side. It was officially opened in May 2021 and sits at Pier 55, near the Chelsea and Meatpacking District neighborhoods. The park replaced a damaged pier that had been closed for years, turning an empty waterfront into a place full of life.
The idea for the park came from media executive Barry Diller and fashion designer Diane von Fürstenberg, who envisioned a floating landscape that would offer recreation and cultural experiences. The architecture firm Heatherwick Studio transformed that vision into reality with a unique design that looks like a floating garden hovering over the river.
Design and Structure
The most distinctive part of Little Island NYC is its foundation. The park is supported by over 130 concrete “tulip” columns of different heights, which rise from the riverbed. Each tulip is shaped like an inverted cone that supports soil, plants, and pathways. From above, the layout looks like petals forming a giant flower on water.
The park covers roughly 2.4 acres and features rolling hills, curved paths, and shaded corners. Its varying elevations allow visitors to experience multiple views — from quiet riverfront angles to high points where they can see across the Hudson River to New Jersey. The design makes every part of the park feel distinct and peaceful, even though it’s located in the heart of the city.
Gardens and Nature
Little Island NYC is filled with natural diversity. It has more than 350 plant species, including perennials, shrubs, and mature trees. The landscape design changes color through the seasons — bright greens in spring, vibrant flowers in summer, golden hues in autumn, and minimalist charm in winter.
The park’s designers focused on creating micro-environments where different plants could thrive depending on sun and wind exposure. Visitors walking through the pathways can notice how the vegetation changes as they move up or down the hill. The sound of the river adds to the calm atmosphere, making it feel far from the busy streets of Manhattan.

Performing Arts and Events
A core part of Little Island NYC’s mission is to celebrate the performing arts. The park has two outdoor stages — the Amph and the Glade.
- The Amph seats nearly 700 people and hosts concerts, plays, and dance performances. Its design faces west, giving audiences sunset views during evening shows.
- The Glade is a smaller performance space surrounded by trees, perfect for community events, local musicians, and family-friendly programs.
Throughout the year, Little Island organizes cultural events featuring jazz performances, poetry readings, storytelling sessions, and art installations. Many events are free or low-cost, keeping them accessible to everyone.
