How Ed Sheeran and Drake started

Ed Sheeran was born Edward Christopher Sheeran in Halifax, England, in 1991. He developed his career through independent music releases and live performances. Before he became a major pop star, he was known for singing his own songs while playing guitar.

His debut studio album, + (Plus), was released in 2011. “The A Team” became an important early single. Its clear story and acoustic sound introduced many listeners to his songwriting. Other tracks, including “Lego House,” helped establish the personal style of his first album.

Drake was born Aubrey Drake Graham in Toronto, Canada, in 1986. He worked as an actor before becoming widely known as a musician. He appeared on the television series Degrassi: The Next Generation, then began releasing mixtapes that drew attention to his music.

“Best I Ever Had” became one of Drake’s first major hits in 2009. His debut studio album, Thank Me Later, arrived in 2010. By then, his ability to rap and sing on the same record had become a key part of his sound.

Their early careers explain much of the difference between them. Sheeran first drew attention as a songwriter and acoustic performer. Drake became known for rap verses, sung hooks, and songs that moved between confidence and vulnerability. Both later explored many other styles without leaving those early strengths behind.

Ed Sheeran’s rise through songwriting

Sheeran’s second studio album, × (Multiply), was released in 2014. It gave him a wider range of hits than his debut. “Sing” had a fast, rhythmic sound, while “Photograph” was a quieter song. “Thinking Out Loud” became one of his most recognized recordings.

Those songs showed that Sheeran did not depend on one type of single. He could make a danceable pop track and a slow ballad for the same album. His voice, direct lyrics, and strong melodies connected the different sounds.

“Thinking Out Loud” was especially important to his career. Sheeran co-wrote it with Amy Wadge. The song became a lasting part of his catalogue and brought him major award recognition. It also showed how a relatively simple arrangement could reach a very large audience.

His 2017 album, ÷ (Divide), expanded his success. “Shape of You” used a strong beat and a repeating vocal hook. “Castle on the Hill” looked back at the place where he grew up. “Perfect” was built as a romantic ballad. Each song offered a different reason for listeners to return to the album.

Sheeran followed with the No.6 Collaborations Project in 2019. The project placed him alongside performers from several musical backgrounds. It made collaboration the main idea of the release instead of treating guest artists as occasional additions.

His later albums included = (Equals), − (Subtract), and Play. They continued to show two sides of his work: large pop productions and more restrained songs that put his writing in the foreground. This variety is central to understanding his music career.

Sheeran has also written with or for other performers. His credits include Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself.” His work as a songwriter therefore extends beyond records released under his own name. A list of Sheeran’s solo hits tells only part of his career.

Drake’s rise through rap and melody

Drake’s debut studio album, Thank Me Later, established him as a major recording artist after the success of his mixtapes. Its single “Find Your Love” placed his singing at the center of a hit. The album also showed that he could move between a rap performance and a melodic one.

His 2011 album, Take Care, became another important step. “Headlines” was direct and confident. “Marvins Room” used a slower, more personal approach. The range of those songs helped define the style that listeners came to associate with Drake.

Nothing Was the Same followed in 2013. “Started From the Bottom” became one of its most recognizable tracks. The album continued Drake’s use of personal lyrics, memorable hooks, and changes in pace. He could sound forceful on one song and reflective on the next.

Drake’s 2016 release Views included “One Dance,” “Controlla,” and “Hotline Bling.” These tracks helped bring his music to listeners beyond a traditional rap audience. They also showed that a Drake hit did not always need a long rap verse. Rhythm, melody, and a short hook could carry the record.

In 2018, Scorpion produced several widely known songs, including “God’s Plan,” “Nice for What,” and “In My Feelings.” The three tracks differed in tempo and delivery. Together, they showed how much space Drake had to change his sound while keeping a recognizable voice.

Later projects included Certified Lover Boy, Honestly, Nevermind, Her Loss with 21 Savage, and For All the Dogs. Some placed more weight on rap. Others gave greater space to dance sounds or collaboration. Drake’s catalogue is large, and individual projects do not all serve the same purpose.

His career has also included many guest appearances. Those recordings matter because a featured verse or hook can introduce an artist to listeners who may not be following a solo release. Drake’s work as a collaborator is a regular part of his recorded career, alongside his own albums and singles.

Their biggest hits

Sheeran’s best-known songs include “The A Team,” “Thinking Out Loud,” “Shape of You,” “Perfect,” “Bad Habits,” and “Shivers.” These tracks cover different points in his career and several kinds of pop music.

“The A Team” represents his early acoustic songwriting. “Thinking Out Loud” and “Perfect” show his strength with ballads. “Shape of You,” “Bad Habits,” and “Shivers” place greater weight on rhythm and production. Looking at the songs together gives a more accurate picture of Sheeran than focusing on only his guitar-based work.

Drake’s best-known tracks include “Best I Ever Had,” “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” “Hotline Bling,” “One Dance,” “God’s Plan,” and “Nice for What.” Some are closer to rap, while others put his singing or a repeated melody in the foreground.

“Best I Ever Had” marks his early breakthrough. “Hold On, We’re Going Home” shows his interest in a smoother pop and R&B sound. “God’s Plan” and “Nice for What” became major later hits with different moods and production styles.

A hit song can serve more than one role in an artist’s career. It may introduce a new audience, support an album, or show a change in musical direction. Sheeran and Drake have both had songs that did all three. Their biggest singles helped make their names familiar even to people who had not heard a full album.

How their music differs

Sheeran usually puts the melody and the song’s main idea within easy reach of the listener. His lyrics often focus on a relationship, a memory, or a personal feeling. The chorus commonly carries the central message. Even when a track has a busy pop arrangement, its structure is often straightforward.

Drake’s music frequently depends on changes in delivery. He may rap a verse, sing a hook, and use a quieter voice elsewhere in the same song. His lyrics often move between public success and private concerns. That shift in tone is a familiar feature of his work.

The difference is clear when comparing two romantic songs. A Sheeran ballad such as “Perfect” presents its feeling directly. A Drake song about a relationship may include more tension or uncertainty. Neither approach describes every song each artist has made, but it helps explain their distinct voices.

Production also shapes the comparison. A Sheeran song can begin with guitar or piano and grow into a larger pop arrangement. A Drake track often begins with a beat, a short musical phrase, or an atmosphere that leaves space for his voice. The choices support different ways of writing and performing.

Both artists have crossed genre lines. Sheeran has worked with rappers and used dance and electronic sounds. Drake has recorded songs with strong pop melodies and influences beyond conventional hip-hop. Their careers show why a single genre label can be useful as a starting point but incomplete as a full description.

Albums and chart success

Sheeran’s album career grew alongside a series of widely heard singles. × reached No. 1 on the US Billboard 200, while ÷ produced several of his signature songs. In the United Kingdom, his albums have repeatedly topped the chart.

The release of ÷ showed the scale of his UK audience. All 16 tracks from the album appeared in the top 20 of the UK singles chart during its opening period. That was more than a result for its promoted singles. Listeners were playing songs across the full album.

Drake also had early album success. Thank Me Later topped the US Billboard 200, and later projects continued his run of popular releases. His singles, album tracks, and collaborations have given him an unusually extensive history on the US Hot 100.

Chart numbers require care when the two artists are compared. A No. 1 album shows how a particular release performed during its chart run. A large number of song entries shows how many tracks reached a chart, including album tracks and collaborations. Those measures answer different questions.

Streaming has also changed what a successful album release looks like. Many songs from one project can enter a singles chart at the same time. Both Sheeran and Drake have benefited from listeners playing more than the main single, though their catalogues and release patterns differ.

Their chart records make one point clear: neither artist’s career rests on a single song. Sheeran has produced hits across several albums and styles. Drake has continued to place solo and collaborative tracks before large audiences over many years.

Grammy Awards and other recognition

Sheeran has won four Grammy Awards. “Thinking Out Loud” won Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. “Shape of You” later won Best Pop Solo Performance, and ÷ won Best Pop Vocal Album.

These wins reflect different parts of his work. Song of the Year is a songwriting award, so the win for “Thinking Out Loud” recognized the composition. The performance awards recognized recordings associated with his voice and presentation as a pop artist.

Drake has won five Grammy Awards. His first win was Best Rap Album for Take Care. His Grammy-winning work also includes “Hotline Bling” and “WAIT FOR U,” a collaboration with Future and Tems.

Award totals are easy to compare but do not tell the whole story. A song can become a major hit without winning a Grammy. Artists also compete in different categories, and one album may receive attention for reasons that differ from those of another. Their four and five wins are factual milestones, not a complete measure of either catalogue.

Both have received recognition beyond the Grammys through charts, music awards, and long-running public attention. The strongest comparison stays specific: which song, album, performance, or writing credit received recognition, and for what work.

Live performances

Live performance has been especially important to Sheeran’s public image. He can perform with a guitar and use a loop pedal to record short musical parts during a song. He then adds to those parts while singing and playing. This allows one performer to create a fuller sound on stage.

That format puts pressure on the song itself. When fewer musicians are present, the melody, lyrics, and vocal performance must hold the audience’s attention. It also lets Sheeran move between quiet songs and large pop hits within the same show.

Drake’s concerts draw on a different range of material. Rap verses, sung hooks, and collaborations give him many ways to change the pace. Some tracks center on his delivery. Others give the crowd a familiar refrain to sing.

Both artists have performed for large audiences, but their recordings suggest different live strengths. Sheeran’s concerts are closely tied to his role as a singer, guitarist, and songwriter. Drake’s draw comes from a broad catalogue of rap and melodic hits. Those differences reflect their musical careers rather than a simple difference in audience size.

What their careers have in common

Sheeran and Drake became widely known during a period when streaming grew into a central way of hearing music. Each built a catalogue with songs that reached people well beyond the audience for an individual album.

They also use collaboration to extend their work. Sheeran writes and records with artists from different genres. Drake appears on other performers’ tracks and has released shared projects. In both careers, those credits form a meaningful part of the music, rather than a footnote to the solo releases.

Both artists can change their sound without losing a recognizable identity. A quiet Sheeran ballad and one of his faster pop songs still share his voice and approach to melody. A Drake rap track and one of his sung singles still carry his phrasing and delivery.

Their most important difference remains the work at the center of each career. Sheeran is known first for writing and singing songs with direct melodies. Drake is known for combining rap, singing, and a wide range of production styles. Their albums, hits, and awards show how far each approach has carried them.
