Destiny 2’s 2025 content brings big changes, new gear systems, and stronger power goals.
The Edge of Fate Expansion & Year 8
The expansion The Edge of Fate dropped in July 2025, ushering in Year 8—also called the “Fate Saga.”
In Year 8, Bungie moved from four small seasons to two medium expansions per year, each with a free major update midway.
The first free major update is Ash & Iron, released in September 2025. It adds new activities, raises power caps, and revises loot systems.
New Systems & Power Progression
When Edge of Fate launched, every guardian’s Power level was reset to around 10. The base cap was set to 200. After that, players raise power via gear that includes Seasonal Bonus Power.
With Ash & Iron, the bonus power ceiling expanded: you can push toward 550 in certain content.
Artifacts changed: they no longer boost power or provide mods. Instead, they now give stat bonuses tied to your gear choices.
Weapons also got a tiering system. Harder content gives better tiers (e.g. Tier 5), which yield stronger weapons with bonus perks.
Major Update: Ash & Iron
Ash & Iron added Reclaim, a three-player activity in the Plaguelands, where you fight to reclaim zones from enemies.
It also delivered an “Epic” version of the Desert Perpetual raid, with extra challenges and better loot.
The update improved the Portal system—more activity options, better rewards, and new modifiers.
It launched a new Reward Pass with 110 ranks, granting weapons, armor, and cosmetics.
It also introduced Chronologs, a currency that helps you unlock past season pass rewards via a Tower archive.
Patch Updates & Fixes (2025)
Update 9.1.5 (October 2025) made many fixes:
- Exotic focusing now scales to your power level instead of being capped.
- Graphics issues with holofoil weapons were fixed.
- Some raids & dungeons had bugs causing reward or progression blocks; those were patched.
- In activities moved to Pinnacle Ops, reward drops and group revivals were improved.
- Weapon tuning tweaks: hand cannons, sidearms, exotic weapon issues were refined.
- Ability & subclass bugs (Void, Strand, Prismatic, Stasis) were addressed (e.g. cooldowns, movement).
- UI fixes: mod icons, weapon stat descriptions, emote collections, and ship naming.
Plans Ahead: Renegades & Season Lawless
The next expansion, Renegades, is scheduled for December 2025. It begins the second half of Year 8, called Season of Lawless.
A future major update (Shadow & Order) will follow in early 2026 for Renegades.
Bungie also reversed a prior plan: they decided Seasonal Bonus Power will carry over into the next season, not reset.
Tips for Guardians in 2025
- Push toward Seasonal Bonus Power gear after you hit base cap. That’s how you climb power now.
- Run Portal activities often — they drop high-tier gear and prime engrams.
- Try Reclaim and the Epic raid mode — they give strong loot and challenges.
- Use the Reward Pass fully — lots of resources and weapons are in there.
- Keep up with patches — many bugs are fixed quickly, especially ones blocking rewards or progression.
- Use new mods and plan gear builds: stat synergy matters now more than raw power.
- Balance content: do story, dungeons, raids, and daily events so you don’t stagnate.
